Q&A with the top leaders at Trident Transport. Today we’re talking to Grayson Garrett, Branch Manager + Sr. Vice President of Sales in our Chattanooga branch.
Describe Yourself in five words:
Dedicated, Ambitious, Fun, Excited, Determined
List three characteristics of your leadership style:
Open: I want to know how our team can be better, as well as, how I can be a better leader.
Fair: Life isn’t always about the win, but how we find the win.
Coach: I want to take my experiences and not only tell someone the answer but revert to the experience to explain why there is an answer.
Do you have a process for making difficult decisions? If so, what is it?
When making a difficult decision, I like to weigh consequences of both sides. I also put a great deal of emphasis on the thoughts of those around me. In managing people, there is no room for just “my” idea or opinion. The team is what gets us through the hard times, not a solo person.
What challenges come with heading up a company?
The biggest challenge is to remember that every person on our team has a different outlook and personality, and that each teammate’s uniqueness is what makes us who we are. Everyone deserves to be treated as who they are, not who we are.
How do you stay grounded, given your authority/leadership responsibilities and success?
It is really not hard for me to stay grounded, as I know that there is more to be done. Whether it be a coaching session with our team or putting my sales hat on, I think the key for me is to always look forward and never think of what is behind you!
Work Life Balance: What does that mean to you? How do you achieve it?
I preach daily to our people that work and home are escapes from the other. If things at work are not good, check it at the door when you leave, go home and reset. There will be another chance tomorrow to get back on track. And vice-versa, if things away from work aren’t peachy then use the time in the office to immerse yourself in a success that will calm the storm. For me, I have a beautiful wife and two great kids who as soon as I walk in the door take any stresses away. The smiles on their faces when daddy walks in the door removes all worry and restores the love of life and what I get to do and the people I get to spend my day with.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
Getting to spend time with my work family. This group of ladies and gentlemen hold a very special place in my heart. I love each and every one of them and love watching their success along the way.
What is your favorite one-line quote?
“Confidence is going after Moby Dick in a rowboat and taking the tartar sauce with you.” The ability to know in your head and your heart that you are able to do something is what separates good from great! Whether playing ping pong or a sales challenge, I always have a strong winning mentality.
What do you do in your spare time?
Spend time with my kids, golf, fish, and EAT!
If you had to give one piece of advice to a younger generation, what would it be?
Never be satisfied and work harder than the people around you.
What’s something not many people know about you?
I am a hotdog connoisseur, since my 20’s I have been on the hunt for the world’s best hotdog!
What’s the last book you read and/or favorite book?
Tough question, my favorite book would have to be Bo knows Bo, the autobiography of Bo Jackson. To see where he came from and how he used his God given talents to redirect his future is incredible.
Do you have a favorite curse word, and if so, what is it?
All of them? I love to cuss in Spanish, just rolls off the tongue better.
What excites and/ or inspires you?
The hope that when I leave this earth that at least ONE person shows up to my funeral and says that something I did or an encounter we had changed their life. That is what inspires me!
Who are your role models and why?
My father and grandfather. They are/were the embodiment of hard working, Godly men, who doesn’t/didn’t take life too seriously. If I can die half the men and fathers that they are/were, I will die happy!
What would you do with your winnings if you hit a huge jackpot lottery?
Whatever I want!
Where would your dream vacation be?
On a boat in the middle of Lake El Santo or Lake Baccarac with my father and friends. Just smoking monster Bass all day!
