Interview with the Boss: Mark Harrell

Describe yourself in five words.
Honest, Dependable, Organized, Hardworking, Energetic

List three characteristics of your leadership style.
Positivity. Being positive filters throughout the entire organization and leads to much higher productivity.
Goal Setting.  Every member of our organization has goals.  My job as a leader is to help them reach those goals.
Coaching. Developing our team members’ strengths ultimately improves their performance.

Do you have a process for making difficult decisions? If so, what is it?
There is no easy way to make difficult decisions.  I try to get all the facts and be sure I understand the consequences of those decisions before making them. I have been fortunate to surround myself with some very talented people and when possible try to rely on those people to help.  One of the biggest mistakes a leader can make in my opinion is making a decision without having all the facts.

What challenges come with heading up a company?
There are new challenges every day.  With our rapid growth we have new faces almost weekly.  These employees see the success of their coworkers and expect to be there quickly.   It can be challenging to manage those expectations.

How do you stay grounded, given your authority/leadership responsibilities and success?
Remembering were I came from and knowing that I wouldn’t be where I am today without my team.

Work-life balance: What does that mean to you? How do you achieve it?
This is extremely important.  If you don’t have this, work will consume your life and eventually productivity will go down.  We have tried to create a work environment that encourages this work-life balance.  I have 2 young children and they definitely keep me busy outside of the office.

What’s your favorite part of your job?
People. I love seeing a new employee land that 1st account or make that 1st large commission check. It is rewarding to see someone put in the work and to reach their goals.

What’s your favorite one-line quote?
“Choose a Job you love and you will never work a day in your life”

What do you do in your spare time?
Spend time with my Family. Golf. Fish. Hunt. Anything outdoors.

If you had to give one piece of advice to a younger generation, what would it be?
I am a big goal setter so I would advise everyone to have goals big or small.   Also don’t be afraid to ask for help.   Everyone has had someone help them along the way.

What’s something not many people know about you?
I hate losing and I am ultra-competitive in most things I do.

What’s the last book you read and what’s your favorite?
I am not a big reader.  The last book I read was “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins.

What profession other than your own would like to attempt?
G
olf Course Architect

Do you have a favorite curse word, and if so, what it is it?
Yes.  Bullshit

What excites and/or inspires you?
Seeing the difference Trident Transport has made in our employees’ lives.

Who are your role models and why?
My parents.  To see how hard they worked so I could I have opportunities in life that they may not have had.  I hope that I can do the same for my children.

What would you do with your winnings if you hit a huge jackpot in the lottery?
I would give most of it away to family and friends.  I would invest a lot of it but of course there are couple items on my bucket list that I would like to check off.

Where would your dream vacation be?
Scotland golf trip or fishing in Alaska with my Dad and my two sons.
